for veterans day, bush introduced The Fallen Patriots Tax Act. it looks to me like dying in the service won’t even buy your widow/widower a new car.
The new law doubles the benefit from $6,000 to $12,000, and makes it retroactive to Sept. 11, 2001, so it covers military operations in Afghanistan, Iraq and elsewhere in the fight against terrorism.
Traditionally, military death benefits have been tax-free. However, in 1991 when Congress raised the benefit from $3,000 to $6,000, it failed to exclude the $3,000 increase from taxation. The new bill increases the exclusion to $12,000, the same amount as the benefit.
